Akiko Fukai, the curator of ‘Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion’ shared the inspiration behind the exhibition and some of the most influential figures in the Japanese sartorial scene.
Why is the 1980s a starting point for Future Beauty?
There is a common thread that runs through fashion from the 1980s in Japan. In Europe, clothing is definitely external to the body. In Japan it is a coming together of the body and the garment. I think that is a very important aspect of Japanese fashion that was introduced to fashion at large. It derives partly from the process of dressing and the rituals – the layering and layering of the kimono, for example. I can’t say that has a truly direct influence, but it is something we cannot deny.
Why was the 1980s such a turning point?
I think Japanese essentially love to wear clothes, and had been copying European fashion. In the 1980s it all came to the fore, and was helped by the Japanese economic expansion of that decade.
